The Chief of Staff is the Assemblymember’s team lead, who ensures that the office’s daily and long-term operations are effectively working towards the Assemblymember’s goals to support the constituents of the 109th Assembly District. They are the primary liaison between the office and governmental agencies, stakeholders, and community leaders, and implement the office’s legislative initiatives while managing the staff. They work in tandem with the District Director and together form the Executive Committee to maintain and improve office systems and procedures while leading constituent services, community affairs, communications, legislative work, and scheduling. They also support and advise the Assemblymember, and work with them to develop relationships and achieve strategic goals.
Responsibilities:
Manages office staff, including daily tasks and projects while setting the direction for staff and obtaining regular reports by staff members to monitor the progress of the office’s goals
Facilitates consistent and transparent communication with staff around decisions and decision-making roles
Manages relationships with stakeholders including other elected officials’ offices, state agencies, community-based organizations, neighborhood associations, advocates, labor unions, and others.
Facilitates an office culture of respect and open communication; mediates and resolves conflict within the staff
Sets agendas and facilitates meetings for the team ensuring delegation of tasks and projects
Establishes, maintains, and examines systems so that workflows are clear and information is easy to find and understand
Proposes the policy agenda for the Assemblymember, analyzes legislation, provides policy consultation in key areas of interest for the Assemblymember, and prepares briefings for the Assemblymember on key legislative items
Manages the time and priorities of the Assemblymember at a high level
Ensures appropriate staffing is delegated for the Assemblymember at all times including on weekends and evenings
Oversees the office’s internal and external communications
Works flexible hours including evenings and weekends
Key abilities and experience:
Excellent time management skills with an eye towards efficiency and efficacy; works under tight deadlines and can prioritize multiple projects and tasks
Demonstrated commitment to organizing in working class communities and building power in Albany, Guilderland, New Scotland, and the greater New York State.
Empathy and respect for constituents
Excellent communication and relationship-building skills
Collaborative and flexible; able to shift directions and/or tactics when needed
Ability to work with basic office computer applications and social media platforms
Knowledge of and familiarity with the communities of the district
The Most Important:
Understands the legislative process, as well as the structure and policies of the New York State legislature, and is effective at coalition building in a legislative context
Location: The role is based in Albany, NY. During the legislative session, the Chief of Staff will be based in the Legislative Office Building. When not in session, the Chief of Staff will be in the District Office.
Salary and Benefits:
$75,000 per year for a full-time overtime exempt position. This position offers health, vision + dental insurance, a retirement plan, and an opt-in life insurance policy. This position comes with sick days, vacation days, and personal time, as well as state holidays.
